PHILOSOPHY

I'm a holistic massage therapist trained in a number of healing modalities, including Swedish massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, acupressure, subtle energy work and one year's training in Shiatsu.

I believe that the combination of authentic presence, skilled and loving touch and clear boundaries can facilitate deep transformation and a profound yet simple acceptance of life as it is in this moment.

One of the guiding forces in my life is my relationship to nature. It's where I feel a profound connection to the universe and to my deepest self. Nature keeps me in balance physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually and if I was asked to offer a prescription for sound health and wellbeing, it would involve spending as much time as possible being nourished by the great outdoors.

My business name, Arbor Vitae, means ‘Tree of Life’, which is symbolic in many cultures of the eternal source of life and the connection between the roots of the earth and the furthest branches of the cosmos. For me, it also powerfully represents the need for people to be rooted, grounded and embodied in their day-to-day lives.

The Tree of Life symbolises many nurturing aspects of life with an equal emphasis on giving and receiving. All of the elements – fire, water, earth and wind – combine their forces to create the awesome, life-giving power of this tree. As its branches reach up to the sky, so does the individual have the opportunity to continue reaching towards their highest potential.

The Arbor Vitae is also a part of our complex brains - the white matter which displays a beautiful branching pattern and which is critical to the co-ordination of movement in the body.

My work is influenced by my interests in myth and metaphor, depth psychology, dance and movement practices, modern day rites of passage for adults and young people, shadow work, neuroscience, trauma resolution, social justice and relational intimacy of all kinds – and the ways in which all of these areas intersect.

I have been greatly inspired by individuals including CG Jung, Maureen Murdock, author of  ‘The Heroine’s Journey’, soul poets such as David Whyte and John O’Donohue, shame researcher Brené Brown and cultural change agents such as Bill Plotkin, Marion Woodman, Vicki Noble, Gail Burkett and Dr Peter Levine.

CLASSIC SWEDISH MASSAGE

A deep and invigorating, yet relaxing treatment. There are five types of stroke that make up the traditional Swedish massage; Effleurage is the main technique, using hands and forearms to glide over the muscles in long, sweeping movements.

Petrissage, friction, vibration and tapotement are also used to release tension from the muscle tissue. Additional benefits can include: increased joint mobility by reducing any thickening of the connective tissue and releasing restrictions in the fascia, reduction of scar tissue, increased blood circulation bringing more nutrients to the skin and muscle, and rapid removal of toxins. Massage also stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, helping to promote relaxation and reduce stress.

AROMATHERAPY MASSAGE

Aromatherapy is the use of concentrated aromatic plant extracts, known as essential oils, for therapeutic purposes. Aromatherapy massage incorporates flowing, gentle yet powerful techniques that deliver the oils into the bloodstream, tissues and organs.

Each essential oil contains unique chemical constituents and healing properties. For example, some are stimulants or have sedative effects; others act as digestive tonics, immune boosters or have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body's systems.

I am committed to using high-grade, organic essential oils and carrier oils for my treatments.

REFLEXOLOGY

Reflexology is an ancient method of natural healing based on the concept that every part of the body correlates with specific points on the feet and hands. By applying precise and steady pressure to these reflex areas, the body’s ability to heal itself is strengthened.

During a session, different thumb, finger and massage techniques are used on the feet or the hands. Experiences vary from a general sense of relaxation to sensations in the corresponding area of the body that the therapist is working on.

Effects can include relief from pain, increased energy, removal of toxins, improved circulation, enhanced sleep and emotional release.

REIKI

Reiki is a simple and natural method of hands-on healing which activates natural healing processes within the body, helping to restore health, wellbeing and balance. Reiki originated in Japan, and means ‘Universal life force’, the vital energy that flows through all living things.

Treatment is usually carried out with the client lying on a couch, fully clothed and the therapist’s hands are placed gently in a sequence of positions all over the body. Most people experience a sense of deep relaxation, peace and gentle tingling. A session can also take the client into a dream state where they experience vivid colours and images.
